Over the course of eight songs and over two hours, Are We There Yet? is not a reinventing of the wheel, nor is it a wrong turn. The album is well-rounded with a fine thematic balance, and is a strong and uplifting addition to the Hillsong catalog. That being said, it is somewhat underwhelming.

The second half of the album is the strongest, offering a medley of almost all of the major stories told on the album. “Whole Heart” is a well-crafted pop song about the power of a healthy and loving relationship; “The Next” is a song about a relationship that has since ended; “Another” is a song about a problem that is fixable in time; “Great” is a song about the problems and struggles that we all face; and “Amen” is a song that every church needs to sing. The second half is the emotional center of the album, and each song stands alone. All of these songs are well-crafted pop songs with heartwarming messages. They are, frankly, great.

Aside from the songs' complexities, the album's release was fueled by the band's desire to fuse their religious identity with pop/rock music, a goal that Hillsong took a long time to accomplish.

With a range of genres and styles, the album's songs continue the past themes of the Hillsong United catalog. Although bringing in the energetic sound of the preceding release, People (Live), the album strays from that sound with an underlying focus on God's grace and confidence in His people.
